A “digital twin” is an exact replica of a real-world item—anything from a machine to a building and even a city—that’s created digitally. Digital twins integrate artificial intelligence, machine learning and software analytics to create these digital replicas whose physical assets change as their physical counterparts change. For example, Tesla makes a digital twin for every car it sells, collecting data from drivers to predict failures and minimize breakdowns.
This technology is used in a variety of industries to improve functionality and increase reliability of products and services.
